Shiva appeared as a Jyotirlinga and stayed as Somnath. The lingam is believed to be swayambhu. The deity is worshipped as the first Jyotirlinga and as a protector who rises after every destruction. The current lingam was installed in 1951 during reconstruction.

The site has been worshipped since antiquity, mentioned in Skanda Purana. The first stone temple was built in Gupta period (4th–6th century). Rebuilt by Bhoj Paramara and Kumarpal Solanki, destroyed again by Alauddin Khalji (1299) and Aurangzeb (1706). After independence, Sardar Patel ordered reconstruction in 1947. K M Munshi led the project, and President Rajendra Prasad consecrated it in 1951. Architecture is Chalukya style with intricate carvings, shikhara 50m high, built in sandstone.
