About Lord Ayyappa

Lord Ayyappa is the son of Shiva and Mohini (female avatar of Vishnu), making him Hariharaputra. He is a celibate boy-god who meditates eternally at Sabarimala. Legend says he killed demon Mahishi and then retired to Sabarimala forest. He is worshipped as Dharmasastha — protector of dharma. The deity is in yoga posture with chin mudra. Sabarimala Temple is located atop Sabarimala hill in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala state, South India. It sits at 914 metres (3,000 feet) altitude in the Western Ghats.
