About Lord Somnath Deity

Lord Somnath means ‘Lord of the Moon’. According to legend, moon god Soma was cursed by Daksha to wane. He worshipped Shiva here and regained his light. Shiva appeared as a Jyotirlinga and stayed as Somnath. The lingam is believed to be swayambhu. The deity is worshipped as the first Jyotirlinga and as a protector who rises after every destruction. The current lingam was installed in 1951 during reconstruction.

Somnath Temple is located in Prabhas Patan, near Veraval town, in Gir Somnath district of Gujarat state, Western India. It sits on the western coastline of the Arabian Sea at sea level. It rose to wealth under Solanki dynasty in 10th century, then was destroyed by Mahmud Ghazni in 1025. Rebuilt by Bhoj Paramara and Kumarpal Solanki, destroyed again by Alauddin Khalji (1299) and Aurangzeb (1706). After independence, Sardar Patel ordered reconstruction in 1947. K M Munshi led the project, and President Rajendra Prasad consecrated it in 1951. Architecture is Chalukya style with intricate carvings, shikhara 50m high, built in sandstone.
